They didn't even follow the events of the novel properly resulting in plot holes and lack of development (thanks to Richardson's screenplay). It's pity that a novel which would have made a fine thriller film has been wasted on a poor film due to over-the-top.everything. Allman manages to keep the balance at times and does better than his co-stars. Foster is unrecognizable but his character has no layer. Ted Prior plays a down-on-his-luck former special forces dude who signs on with this crew so he can make some cash that he. Michelle Horn is pretty but she's the clichéd whiny teen. The Hostage is about a gang of high-end thieves who plan to break into a really rich businessman's house, hack into his computer, and download all his money. Oh and there's also this irritating Jimmy Bennett who tries to be cute and screams. Willis is in his Die Hard mode, shouting at people and running around. The director really made it into a 'Die-Hard' style action flick. Add to that, the over the top performances by every single member of the cast who are mostly yelling and screaming. The background score is heavily intrusive and makes every single situation overtly dramatic. It's executed in the form of an uninteresting episode of 'CSI: Miami'. Now I know most adaptations of novels tend to not match the original in terms of overall quality. Overall, if you’re in the mood to watch bad thrillers (I have those moods sometimes), then give this one a watch for the shits and giggles.I had read Robert Crais's novel some years ago and remember enjoying the book as a good thriller. The sluggish pace, too, does nothing for it. You don’t connect with the family and their backstories seem uninteresting. It’s mostly cringy and sadly, the baddies don’t feel bad enough. Every decision and every moment is something we have seen in other movies and you’d be able to figure out where this is going from the first minute. Hostage House is a low-budget thriller that brings nothing new to the table. Schilling’s potty face of pain is amusing at best and Julia Terranova is annoying.Īlso Read: Netflix’s Rurouni Kenshin The Beginning (2021) Review: The Strong Prequel To It All Summing up: Hostage House Everyone mostly overacts although I’d say Jennifer Taylor is better out of them all. I know smart decisions aren’t everyone’s forte in thrillers, but still.Ĭoming to performances, Hostage House consists of nothing interesting. As the movie unfolds, you will question each and every decision these people make. But whatever, the biggest gripe I have with this movie is that these people make the worst decisions. The guy, because of a wound in his stomach, looks like he needs a bathroom break asap. The baddies, when they are introduced in Hostage House, look like bad people but act very confused and unsure. Most of the audience are acclimated to that trope and it adds nothing to the story. I am tired of jumpscares, and more so when there is no danger. The movie plays dramatic and spooky music very early into the runtime, giving us false jumpscares for some reason. Two burglars, one invasion, a kid (not so small though) to protect. So, what does this movie bring to the table that’s new? We have seen home invasion/hostage movies aplenty, the most notable one being Panic Room. This movie is your usual run-of-the-mill thriller, with mama bear trying to protect her cub from danger. – Hostage House review does not contain spoilers –īefore the action starts in Hostage House, the movie gives us ample foreshadowing to let us know what is going to happen and how everything is going to come into play later on. When an ambitious realtor and her daughter are held hostage during an open house, they must work together to outsmart their captors. The IMDB description for Hostage House reads:
